Mexican Folk Art

Almost a year ago I wrote about loving estate sales and collecting Mexican folk art. Today I am starting another series that will showcase some of the cool Mexican folk art that I live with and love. And we are going to start with Frida. This piece is also the latest addition to my collection. This Frida is a ceramic skeleton bobble head that is about 16″ tall. Do you not love the glitter? I was lucky enough to be given a gift certificate to one of the local Mexican folk art shops in town and when I walked in their door the glittery bobble head Fridas jumped out at me. I have a Frida poster framed and hanging in the living room but it is just so tasteful. I like the trashiness aspect of this Frida and I think even she would appreciate the melding of genres in this creation. If you are not familiar with Frida Kahlo, click on her name. I have linked a different web site each time her name appears.
Isn’t she lovely?

I love that stuff too. And it’s because of you Miss Patti. I cherish the few pieces I picked up when I came to visit you ages ago, and I dream of going back and combing the stores for more!
I have an interesting piece of Mexican art I found here years ago…it’s an Insect Devil and looks quite bizarre. He’s black and covered with colorful bugs, he also sits in his own chair. And NO, I don’t worship the devil, but the story goes: if you welcome the devil into your home with art, he’ll leave you alone (or something like that). I’m not so sure he’s left me alone. And I know the cats haven’t left him alone, sadly.

I was looking for colorful photographs that I could download and print. I do volunteer work for our Local Elementary school. My mother works with children in the English Learner program and we finally got a adequate size room to teach in. three year fight. We are making items that will decorate the room. I was hoping to find photos of mexican market place Floral puestos to hang.
Many of the children are settled-in farmworkers. Who’s parents now work in nursaries growing beautiful plants. We thought this would be a nice way of welcoming the children and honoring the family’s work.
Anything you could send with an indeginous theme for decorating our class room would greatly appreciated
