I don’t watch a lot of television but I plan on being in front of the tube on Wednesday and Thursday this week to view PBS’ new programs on Crafts. I’ll let them tell you all about it: Craft in America. Check your local listings and tune in. It looks fascinating and I think that quite of few of us will be interested in viewing these special programs. Now I just wonder if I can crochet at the same time I watch this, I started working on a new paisley and its just so hard to put down…..

Thanks Patti for the reminder & the PBS link. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this program. There seems to be a resurgence of interest in crafts among the younger generation…my daughter while in college had her weekly “stitch & bitch” session with friends. What do your think of the relationship between the fine & decorative or applied arts?

I wonder if its a resurgence of interest in crafts at all. I think maybe the interest has always been there, at least it was in my life and the lives of my friends. We’re in our early fifties. I think the difference may be the fact that we’re able to see globally what people are creating thanks to the internet. You used to have to wait for an art/craft show to occur to see lots of hand crafted items and the makers. Now, its just a click away. As far as the relationship between the fine arts and decorative arts, well, its always been tense, with fine “looking down” at the decorative as not being as important etc. Don’t know that it will ever end.
