Crochet Paisley

I’m probably the last person on earth to discover the crocheted paisley motif. I happened to pick up a used book at the library book sale on Saturday entitled Exotic Styling (the Art of Sewing) by Time-Life Books. It cost me 50 cents. It has lots of color photos and line drawings. And it has a few pages on the crocheted paisley motif.
I, of course, the obsessive one, had to make one. And in case you are like me and haven’t discovered the fun of crocheting a paisley or two but need the instructions, I scanned and made a PDF for that very purpose. You will of course need to have the Acrobat Reader software to read or print.
There is also this very cool top pattern that I just might have to try to make someday if I ever figure out how to not get bored making the same thing over and over…I still haven’t revisited my granny squares. I just got so tired of making the same thing over and over… If you have more discipline than me and want to try to make it, the pattern has again been made into PDF.
I would have made the PDF files downloadable if I could ever figure out how to make this WordPress blog software co-operate with me. So if you wish to save the file, I think you can do a save as in reader. If not, well, try to print the pattern. And if that doesn’t work for you, well drop me a line and I’ll email it to you. Hopefully, Time-Warner won’t have a conniption fit, the book is out of print and I am sharing this information for educational purposes.

That is so pretty! I’ve never heard of it so ur not alone.;-) I may try the pattern later on. I feel the same way about granny squares and repetitive stuff. You again, are not alone! 😉

You got a DEAL on that book! I think I paid about $8 for it in a used bookstore in 29 Palms, CA.
No, I haven’t made a paisley yet, but I know what you mean about being bored with granny squares. I think the paisleys might make a nice shawl..joined…lots of different colors.

I do not know when I have enjoyed a site more. Love the cats!!! My very best internet friend in England is cat crazy! Would love to make one for her for Christmas. She flew to Canada just to meet me 2 yrs ago and we have been faster best friends than ever.

I once saw a beautiful multi colored paisley crotchet shawl pattern which appeared in a magazine in the 80’s. It was made with soft colred mohair like yarns. (At that time I could not afford it)Unfortuanely I lost the magazine when moving from one place to another. I don’t even remember if it was Good Housekeeping or Better Homes & Gardens of Redbook.
Any way, if someone has the pattern I would love to pay for the pattern.
Meeanwhile, I would definitely try this pattern. Thanks for posting.

Hi , I was really interested to see your comment, as I am looking for just that pattern! I did make the shawl, in the late ’70’s but it got ‘lost’ in a house move, I would love to make it again, it was slow but not that difficult. The only photo I have, it is rather scrunched up on the sofa, with my cat sitting on it, but you can see some of the beautiful colours. I hope you see this – its a bit late……

Heather, I just now saw your comment and question. Sorry. I’m pretty sure that a lot of my stitch counts don’t match the pattern, so do what I do, wing it. If it looks allright, then don’t worry about it. And it took me several tries before I could get one to look right, I kept ripping it out and starting again until I was satisfied. Don’t give up, keep trying.

Patti, you have such a lovely site, and you are so very generous. One of the really great things I enjoy about people who knit and crochet are their wonderful generous spirits.
I need to let you know, though, that by scanning an actual pattern and posting that on your site that you are infringing on the copyright held by the publisher.
Part of the copyright law that applies in this situation is distribution (when you scan it and share it on your blog, you are distributing the pattern). What you can do, without getting into any trouble, is to post a picture of your crocheting that you did yourself with a link to the book.

I think there is a reasonably good chance Patti is not iin violation of teh copyright laws. The book Exotic Styling (the Art of Sewing) was published by Time-Life Books in 1974. Books published before 1978 received 29-year copyright proteection, in this case until 2003. Unless the copyright was renewed, the publisher no longer holds the copyright for this book.
In addition, instructions for crocheted paisleys have been published in many other places, including the magazine mentioned by Indrani, above, Crocheted Scarves, a Vogue Knitting-on-the-Go volume, 201 Crochet Motifs, Blocks, Patterns and Ideas by Melody Griffiths, and others. Eventually a pattern for a shape becomes part of the public domain.
Perhaps a crocheting lawyer could weigh in on this.

JoLene, I never intended to infringe the copyright. The book is out of print. The only copies I could find listed on Amazon or other books sites were all used copies, not new.

I know you were not intending, truly I do. I only weighed in to help, believe me.
Where you can get into trouble is by making a scan of the book and posting that scan in a pdf.
Even though the book is out of print, it isn’t that old and you just don’t know what rights the publisher may or may not have renewed, by either the publisher or the designer, without contacting them.
You have a wonderful site, and again I am just trying to be helpful by educating a little. I am not a lawyer, but I am a designer, and a professional member of the Association of Knitwear Designers (I am the Industry Communications Chair).
The same copyright laws that pertain to knitting also pertain to crochet.
The safest thing to do would be post a picture of one you made yourself with a link to the book on amazon or another site that sells used books, if you cannot or don’t get in touch with the publisher.

In response to message 36 above, again where you can get into trouble is by scanning a pattern from a book and posting the pattern as a pdf. The reason for this is you are essentially making a color photocopy and distributing it without permission from the copyright holder. What is included in the copyright is not the design itself, which is a another issue itself, but the elements that make up the page as it is seen in the book. The photograph, the layout, the words, everything the publisher put into that document.
You are right, there are things that fall into the public domain as they are so common of a shape…but unless you type out the words yourself, layout the page yourself, and do the photography yourself, you can run into problems with copyright violation, because it is the page itself as it is in the book that is covered by the copyright.
Without contacting the publisher for permission, there is no way of knowing whether or not the publisher will be re-issuing this at some point, or continues to hold rights, regardless of how basic it is. It is the copy and distribution of what they produced, not the basic item itself, that is in question.

Now, if you made your own sample and typed out instructions word for word as they appear in the book, you could still be in violation of copyright law, as you are using the same words as in the pattern in the book.

I actually have the orginal book of these pasiley patterns,Iit took the better part of 3 months to make 186 of them.There is 11 varations.And it took 17 skeins of yarn…wish i could share the picture with you some how…repetiton can be a good thing “)

Patti! Hello & happy hooking. I’m currently attempting a never-before feat… to make the afghan that rivals all others. I’m a mom of 5-12 yog, 10 yog, 5 yob, 3yob, & 2 yog. As a mom you learn tht stains & spills constantly gravitate to where you least want them. My futon klic-klac couch has become my bed. Making the living room- when the kids finally go to sleep- my bedroom. Because it’s more-so the living room by day. I’d like to make a cover that scares any company or my children from going near it… Something that says “See how beautiful I am- Don’t you dare touch me-you don’t deserve to feel my beauty!” Please help with as many crochet patterns that you know of or/& where to find them. Thanks so very much for getting back to me. :^)!! So far I’ve found a total of 6 paisley patts-including the ones you provided.I’m not sure why I’m so taken by this weirdly shaped object.In so little things, I tend to see so much.Want some irony?The same patt that I’m attempting to do (in loads of repetition), is the same patt that’s on the center pillow of my couch.Yeah, go figure!Big ones, little ones.But not smothering.Every dad’s day (as a kid) I gave my dad a paisley tie.Seeing these has inspired me to find 10-new never-given-to-him-before paisley adorned ties.I’ll just have to variate the colors & shades.LOL!Again thank you.I’m wondering now if I could change my name legally, to Paisley Ryan(yarn), of course.Not kidding!

This is such a unique entry, thank you, I probably could have come up with similar myself but would never have thought of it…I love the colours in the top but where the sleeves join, it needs modernising for better fit.

(laughs) Well, you discovered crocheted paisleys about 5 years before I did, so you’re doing something right. Thank you for putting those PDFs together and uploading them here. I’ve been on a motif-making frenzy designing some art pieces the last few days and was happy to find an organic, non-square shape. Being relatively new to crochet, I still need patterns now and then! Anyway, it’s appreciated.
